Introduction
I am an interdisciplinary global development academic with research expertise on:
  • volunteering in humanitarian and development contexts
  • civil society, citizenship and development
  • climate action and voluntary and unpaid labour
I have extensive experience of leading large and complex multi-partner global research projects and teams to deliver real world impact and change in partnership with local, national and global humanitarian and development organisations.

I co-lead the Northumbria Centre for Global Development and lead the Volunteering, Humanitarian Crises and Development Research Peak at Northumbria University, UK, a leading global hub of expertise bringing together researchers, practitioners, policy makers and students working together to understand and enhance voluntary labour in humanitarian and development activity.

I am also the Dean of Research Culture at Northumbria University. To find out about more about this visit Northumbria's Research Culture pages.

This is a personal webpage sharing publications, projects and collaborations and consultancy, alongside a few photographs I have taken. You can also visit my Personal University Page or google scholar to see my full list of publications.

Projects
I have led and c0-led a number of large international inter and transdisciplinary projects funded by government research councils, specialist funding agencies, governments and humanitarian and development organisations. These have focused on issues including refugee volunteering, climate change in deltas in Asia, youth citizenship, international volunteering and development, and volunteering in conflicts and emergencies. They have often brought together teams and networks of academics and practitioners across global South and North, producing actionable insight and knowledge as well as making contributions to academic knowledge. Across my work, I prioritise participatory and co-creative processes, supporting capacity development amongst all team members and partners to develop sustainable and long-lasting work.

Publications
I publish in leading international peer-reviewed journals across disciplines, in books and in formats for policy makers, practictioners and the wider public. This includes innovative participatory resources, such as 'serious games', designed to enable active engagement with research findings. You can find examples of some of these here.

Collaborations and consultancy
Most of my work is collaborative and inter or trans disciplinary, whether with other researchers or in partnership with policy makers or practitioners, including leading global humanitarian and development organisations.

I am committed to working in ways that challenge hierarchies around who counts as a researcher and knowledge producer, and this is reflected in my use of participatory approaches to research design and delivery, data collection, analysis, writing and publishing.

To find out more about my approach to collaborating, visit the collaborations and consultancy page.  If you are interested in exploring a potential collaboration, contact me via email.
